Recreating the Role of the Four Elements (Water, Wind, Earth, Fire) in Contemporary Architecture: From Climatic Function to the Generation of Collective Space in Art Centers

Sustainable architecture has consistently sought to establish a balance between the built environment and nature. In this context, the four elements (water, wind, earth, and fire), although they played a central role in providing climatic comfort in traditional architecture, have often been reduced in contemporary architecture to technical and mechanical solutions, while their spatial and social capacities have been largely neglected. This is despite the fact that an exclusive emphasis on the quantitative dimensions of sustainability cannot lead to the creation of high-quality, memorable spaces responsive to social needs. The aim of this study is to redefine the role of the four elements in contemporary architecture and to examine how they have transitioned from “mere climatic functions” to “generators of form and collective space” in art centers. The research method is descriptive–analytical and is based on the comparative analysis of three prominent international and national case studies: the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, the City of Arts and Sciences, and the Stone Hill Center. These cases were selected according to purposive criteria including functional similarity, sustainable approaches, and the quality of social interactions. The findings indicate that in all three cases, the four elements have transcended one-dimensional climatic solutions and have become organizers of spatial hierarchy, enhancers of the sense of place, and facilitators of social interaction. Water functions as a central and unifying element (the pools in Stone Hill and Valencia); wind operates as a ventilation factor and cultural symbol (the windcatchers of the Tehran Museum); earth appears through vernacular materials and integration with topography; and fire/light serves as an element for creating meaningful contrasts of light and shadow and controlling spatial perception. Simultaneously, all these elements respond to climatic, aesthetic, and social needs. The results of this study, while emphasizing the necessity of a holistic perspective on sustainability, propose a conceptual framework for employing natural elements as design catalysts in contemporary architecture. This framework can serve as a guide for architects in creating sustainable, identity-oriented, and interaction-driven artistic spaces in which the boundaries between nature, art, and society are dissolved.
