Artistic and Aesthetic Approaches in Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering, concerned with the construction of structures such as buildings, bridges, roads, dams, railways, docks, water canals, urban water supply and wastewater systems, and other civil infrastructure projects. It is also involved in their repair and maintenance. Alongside this discipline, architectural engineering can be regarded as a complement to civil engineering in the design, construction, and completion of a structure. Architectural engineering, which represents a synthesis of science and art, addresses structural ornamentation, interior design considerations, and the artistic and aesthetic dimensions of the built environment. Beauty is considered one of the defining characteristics of architectural engineering because this discipline fundamentally operates within environments that are intertwined with human life—human beings who are inherently attracted to beauty and continually strive to seek it. Consequently, aesthetics constitutes one of the fundamental pillars of architectural engineering, and this characteristic has transformed it into an artistic discipline. In addition to architectural engineering, other forms of art, such as painting, calligraphy, stained-glass work, mirror work, woodcraft, and similar artistic practices, contribute to the aesthetic enhancement of structures, particularly sacred and historical sites, mosques, shrines, and palaces. However, the question arises: “Can only these arts, together with the science and art of architectural engineering, be regarded as the foundations of aesthetics in a structure?” Furthermore, “Does civil engineering play no role in the beauty of a structure?” To answer these questions, this study first presents an overview of civil engineering and its body of knowledge. It then examines the concept of aesthetics and, finally, explores artistic and aesthetic approaches within structures. It is argued that, prior to the role of architectural engineering in ornamentation and beautification, civil engineering itself has already contributed significantly to both the aesthetic quality and artistic character of a structure.
